From the Portrait Society of America (PSA)

The Portrait Society of America would like to invite you to attend the

2-day Portrait Academy in Sarasota, Florida at the Southern Atelier on November 14 & 15, 2008, featuring accomplished artist Master Douglas Flynt. The Portrait Academy will provide an opportunity for artists to watch and learn from a leading artist in the field of portraiture and figurative art. The format will be flexible including a demonstration on Friday, November 14 from 6:00p - 9:00p and a one-on-one instructional workshop on Saturday, November 15, 2008 from 9:00a - 4:00p. Attendees can choose to attend the Friday night demonstration solely or the two-day event format:

Friday, November 14, 2008 - Demonstration by Douglas Flynt (6:00p - 9:00p)

On Friday evening, our featured artist will demonstrate the painting process from start to finish. A questions and answer session will follow, allowing audience members to participate in an intimate conversation with the artist.

Saturday, November 15, 2008 - Full-day Workshop with instruction by Douglas Flynt (9:00a - 4:00p)

The Friday night demonstration sets the stage for the all-day workshop on Saturday.  Attendees will set up their easel and paint from a live model under the featured artist’s instruction. In addition, portfolio reviews will be available at the end of Saturday’s session in which the participants will be offered expert advice and guidance.

Douglas Flynt

Biography

Douglas Flynt's (b. 1978) artistic education includes a BFA and a BA in History and Criticism of Art from Florida State University as well as a MFA from the New York Academy of Art. While studying at Florida State University he apprenticed with the vice chair of the Portrait Society of America, Edward Jonas. Later he studied under Jacob Collins and Michael Grimaldi at the Water Street Atelier. In addition he has studied drawing with Anthony Ryder.

Flynt's teaching experience includes numerous workshops and classes, as well as instructing privately in his atelier.

Flynt's subject matter ranges from still-life and trompe l'oeil, to interiors and figurative works. It has been said of Flynt that "His works are composed with a precise allure and rendered in great detail. His colors are bold and sure; and his use of light and shadows is compelling."

To register, please complete the registration form or visit the Portrait Society of America’s website at www.portraitsociety.org Contact the Portrait Society of America with any additional questions by calling toll-free 1-877-772-4321 or send an email to: info@portraitsociety.org

Registration Fees: Two-day format - Friday Demonstration and Saturday Workshop - $159; Demonstration Only - $35. High school and college art students - no charge (demonstration only) pre-registration is required

Click here for a Portrait Society of America's Registration Form (PDF format)

P.S. Availability for spaces at these events are based on a first come, first registered basis. These programs sell out quickly therefore artists encouraged to register early. Once a program fills, a waiting list will be established.

Please note: This workshop is a bit different from many

The focus of the workshop will be portraiture and not the entire figure and will focus on - how to see, along with organizing and understanding what we see—an insight that will transcend any subject matter.

During the workshop Douglas Flynt will be giving individual feedback, tailoring it to the participants' specific process they are painting with and discussing the aspects which he feels he can mostly assist with.

However, because of the very short duration of this workshop it is Douglas's intention to allow participants to precede

in the manner most comfortable for them, either emulating what he did during the demonstration or drawing and painting as they normally would.
